Hmm, it is very odd that you are getting permissions errors on the NIME papers -- I just opened one at random from the abstracts link you gave, without difficulty. Are you going through some form of corpnet? When I do so, I also have issues, e.g. the Tom Mitchell paper, which I could only load from home.

Making my own data glove is another whole project unto itself, and one which I am waaaaay less qualified for :-) I would pay the $1,500 in an instant rather than do that, as the amount of time I'd spend on it would dwarf $1,500 within three months. I am just not a hardware guy....

I hear your advocacy for pure Kinect and I will consider it, but for a lot of the degrees of freedom I want to add, I really don't know how it would work with Kinect. But that may be simply because I haven't thought about it enough :-) I will keep it in mind and I will prioritize some minimal experiments.

Thanks as always for your interest!

Great post!

I love that the 5DT gloves are fingertip-less, giving Imogen Heap the ability to play her kalimba while continuing to use gesture based controls. As a drummer, that really appeals to me! The price for the gear, however, does not (I could buy several pieces of high end electronic drumming gear for that kind of cash). That being said, I have got to wonder how hard it would be to create a DIY version of those gloves.

wireless: (will it be high speed/low latency enough? looks like there was a NIME paper on the subject, and they were using ZigBee, so that's a good sign)

Unfortunately the link to the Tom Mitchell paper gave me a permissions error, it doesn't appear to be shared publicly. New Interfaces for Musical Expression looks like it was an amazing conference! I'd love to attend a conference like that someday. I was looking forward to digging into the various papers when I have time, but they all appear to be giving me permissions errors?

On the subject of low latency mobile audio, I was intrigued to begin learning about Android's implementation of OpenSL the other day. It's part of their NDK, so you would write C/C++ code in order to use it. Does Windows Phone 7 let you "go native" when you need to, or is everything necessarily managed code? I'm probably going to be experimenting a bit with Android's OpenSL in the near future.

Holy cow, Singing Fingers looks awesome! I love the other projects from those folks too, especially the hybrid arduino/mobile experiments.

Finally, I really want to encourage you to think hard about using the Kinect controller-free. I very much share your concerns about latency, but I just have a hunch that it might not be a huge issue. Seriously! Check out Artful Codger at the Controllerism battle back in June:

I am seriously impressed with the Kinect, and I believe it deserves serious consideration for its potential as a musical instrument.

I am still trying to get it demoable for my trip to Vancouver a week from today. Hopefully I will nail my final sync bug this evening. After that I will start packaging it for presentation, making a Youtube video or two -- my six-year-old daughter does a great job playing with it already! -- and beefing up the setup instructions.

Shooting for end of this week. I am contractually not recommended to make specific date commitments about any non-work projects, but that is my vague desire ;-) Stay tuned!

Cheers!
